On Sunday morning, June 12, 2016, moments after 2 a.m., Omar Mir Seddique Mateen shot over 100 people at Pulse, a gay bar in Orlando, Florida, killing 49. Fox News reported that Mateen was heard shouting “Allah Akbar” and that he also called 911 during the shooting to pledge allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
While watching the news of the Orlando shooting, I heard the commentary by Sen. Bill Nelson, “…ask ourselves who we are as a people?” It was a good question.
He reminded me that it is important to choose for ourselves who we are going to be in the face of each moment.
I then checked in with my heavenly colleagues and this was some of their commentary:
“Until you know who you are, you can’t know or love others to the degree necessary for all to remain safe.”
“Let go of preconceived notions.”
“There is more to this story than meets the eye.”
“It is time for everyone to experience peace. But, peace must come from within first. This shooter obviously did not come from a place of peace. But, that does not mean you cannot and should not go and remain there [a place of peace] for yourself.”
“The terror that now enrages all who engage in it, is caused by darkness. That darkness now permeates the heart and minds within all who lay witness to this story.”
“In each moment, you get to choose a response to acts of darkness. Do you respond in kind? Do you choose the light and ask to be healed of these terrors? Do you ask God for the solution or do you take it upon yourself alone to deal with these issues (whether you have a connection to the story or not).”
And, then lastly, God came through with this comment: “I come forth to you now with these words to soothe the hearts and minds of all. All who were and are involved in this shooting are my children, my creation and my responsibility. All, and I mean all, who are now deceased because of this act of violence are with me now. There are no exceptions to this no matter how you judge or view this dilemma.”
I wish he said more but that was all he chose to share in this moment.
