The United States was founded on certain principles. I tried to adhere to them. However, there was much strife at the time I was in power. I held the office of the Presidency in great esteem. It meant the world to me to be able to make a difference to others. It meant an opportunity to promote change and I did. What it did not give me, however, was satisfaction. I was troubled; very troubled. Nothing seemed to happen easily and yet it happened in a way that had an impact on others in a positive way overall but not without much suffering.
I regret the suffering people endured while trying to make that difference. You end up being remembered for the positive affect you made as a President and that is honorable and I am grateful. Please understand, however, that I also have much regret. I regret the struggles people endured during my time as President. I wish there could have been nothing but peace and happiness during my reign but there was not. There was much bloodshed and that bloodshed I regret. There were many tears and I regret those tears.
I come to you today to thank you for honoring my birth and ask you forgiveness for not being a better leader. I could have saved more lives and I would have if I knew how at the time but did not.
It is done. It is forgiven.
